Their Eyes Were Opened
God Loves us, and His Love is eternal. God gives us, mortal human beings, the gift of immortality. This is the reason why we should be full of joy during this time of Easter. It is true that we experience many difficulties, times of darkness, and uncertainty in our lives. Yet, today’s gospel is an invitation to meet with the risen Lord, even in our difficulties,
Just as the disciples were on their way to Emmaus and just as they encountered Jesus, we are also on the way—the path to Heaven. As we follow the path, we, too, encounter Jesus in other people, in prayer, in the Scriptures, and—most miraculously—in the Holy Eucharist. At every Holy Mass, we (like the Apostles) recognize Jesus after He rose from the dead in the breaking of the bread:
“And it happened that, while he was with them at table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him.”
Today we partake of the same Eucharist as the Apostles. We receive the very same Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of our Lord. But do we recognize Him? Do we believe?
Sunday’s Gospel comes to life in our lives during this and every celebration of the Eucharist. In the same way that Jesus met with his Apostles after His resurrection He comes to us. Therefore, He is truly alive! He is with us. This is the reality that we as Catholics profess to believe. So, let us be people of hope and love. During this season of Easter, I would like to invite you to open your hearts to Jesus, so that He may give you true joy. I pray that one day, like King David, we all may pray: “My heart has been glad and my tongue has exulted; my flesh, too, dwells in hope, because you will not abandon my soul to the netherworld.”
