Celebrate 70!

This page will continuously be updated as additional event information becomes available.

Dear Parishioners and Visitors,

We’re extremely excited to celebrate Our Lady of the Wayside Parish’s 70th Anniversary! From very humble beginnings  (a broken-down shack which served as our first rectory) in 1953 we have been blessed to evolve into a large, dynamic parish with a beautiful church, a blue-ribbon award-winning school, a wonderful religious education program, a long list of ministries and outreach programs, and more!

All of this wouldn’t have been possible without committed and loving parishioners who generously gave — and continue to give — their time, talent, and treasure throughout the years, and who shared their vision, and helped shape this vision into a beautiful reality.

You’re invited to celebrate this Jubilee Anniversary with us by volunteering to help with, or by simply participating in the cornerstone events listed below (scroll down to see them).  Join us as we joyously Celebrate 70!

Chair, Celebrate 70 Committee

Family Mass With Cardinal Cupich (April 16)

In honor of our Parish’s 70th Anniversary, Cardinal Blase Cupich has graciously agreed to Celebrate 70 with us, by presiding at Family Mass on Sunday, April 16 at 9:30 am. The Mass will be concelebrated by Fathers Arthur and Gilbert as well as by former pastors. We have also extended invitations to our teachers and former (retired) teachers and staff. As with all Family Masses, School and REP students will actively participate in the liturgy and choir. This is Cardinal Cupich’s first visit to Our Lady of the Wayside and this Mass is certain to be a joyous occasion for all!

Memorial Day Parade Float (May 29)

Our Lady of the Wayside will participate in this year’s Arlington Heights Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 29. We are looking for volunteers of all ages to help build an “OLW Celebrates 70!” float that represents the spirit and vitality of our Church, School, Religious Education Program, and Ministries. If you have decorated a float before, we need your expertise. If you’ve never decorated a float before, this is your chance learn, have a LOT of fun with other parishioners and families, and to let your creativity SHINE!

All Parish Picnic (June 10)

Who doesn’t enjoy a great picnic?! Things are in the works to plan a Celebrate 70 Picnic like none we’ve ever had before. Lots of great food and drink, fellowship and laughs, a live band, children’s games, adult games, a dunk tank, and whatever else we can come up with between now and June 10.  Come to 5:00 pm Mass on Saturday, June 10 to pray as a united community of believers, and stay for the festivities right after! We’re looking for #doers and #differencemakers to help make this the best picnic ever!

Parish Golf Event (July 14)

It doesn’t matter what your handicap is, but it DOES matter that you save the date and then hit the links with your fellow parishioners at Old Orchard Country Club on Friday, July 14. This will be an all-parish (men and women) shotgun event, followed by dinner and drinks — not only for golfers, but also for anyone who wants to come afterwards to enjoy fellowship and laughs. We’re looking for both sponsors and volunteers for this event.

Oktoberfest & SVdP 5K Run (September 23)

Ready to get your oompah on? For the first time in its 70 year history, OLW will host its first Oktoberfest Bash on Sunday, September 23 (yes, Oktoberfest really does take place in September). Break out your lederhosen and dirndls and get ready for German beer, brats, bands and good times. PROST!

Oh… and before the oompah begins… lace up your running (or walking) shoes and join in the Saint Vincent DePaul 5K fun run/walk that raises money for those in need. Beer always tastes better after a brisk walk or run (and making an important difference in our community), yes?!
