Focus on God’s Love
In the story of the Prodigal Son, the older brother thought that he loved his father. In reality, he loved only himself. We know that the older brother was focused on himself based on his response to his younger brother’s return. When the older brother learned of the great feast being celebrated in honor of his prodigal brother, the older brother became angry. He looked at himself and he saw what he thought he lacked: a party. The older brother was so focused on himself that he did not see that he was always with his loving father and that everything that the father had was his.
Sometimes when we come to the Mass, we concentrate on ourselves. We think about our problems and worries. We think about the luxuries we do not have and the things, circumstances, and people we think we need to make our lives pleasant and peaceful. We fail, however, to think about Jesus or remember that we already have EVERYTHING: God Himself who is here with us—Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity—in the Eucharist as the Good Father, ready to forgive.
God is love; He is full of mercy.
Lent is a time for us to return to Jesus and refocus on Him, to accept His forgiveness, especially in the areas of our lives where might assume we do not need it.
In what remains of Lent, I would like to invite you to concentrate less on yourselves and more on the Father’s Love. Return to Jesus, focus on Him, and invite Him into your heart where you will discover that, in Him, you have Everything, the solution to all of your problems, cares, and concerns.
Yours in Christ,
Father Arthur
