The Calling of St. Matthew

In Saturday’s Gospel (Mt 9:9-13), Jesus called Matthew, the tax collector, to be His disciple. This moment is captured magnificently in Caravaggio’s masterpiece, The Calling of St. Matthew. Matthew’s ‘Who, me?’ expression is probably not unlike that of many ordinary people – sinners and imperfect – who Jesus called to discipleship.
Jesus calls all of us to be His disciples – to be His hands, His feet, and His witnesses. We are called to actively live our faith, and to raise our children in this faith.
Saint Matthew, pray for us. Our Lady of the Wayside, pray for us.
