Father Arthur Shares How Jesus Feeds Our Physical and Spiritual Hunger

18th Sunday of Ordinary Time – Year A 2020

Dear Brothers and Sisters!

Today’s Gospel about the multiplication of the loaves shows us what God wants to reveal to us about Himself. On the one hand, the Son of God wants to show us how He cares; He satiates the physical hunger of those who have gathered to listen to Him. Jesus is very close to us, and He cares for our essential needs. Said simply, Jesus satisfies man’s human hunger. 

On the other hand, Jesus wants to satiate our spiritual hunger. God is very close to man. We know that Jesus remains with us in the form of Bread. In the Eucharist, He is present to us: Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity. He is our daily, living Bread—our food for eternal life. To receive the Eucharist means to become one with God—to be close to Him. 

Every day God wants to share the Bread of His life here on this altar. The extent to which God wants to enter into our existence is amazing! It is really unbelievable that Jesus wants to feed us with Himself and be united with us not only physically, but spiritually too. 

And one more thing: in today’s Gospel Jesus tells the Apostles to “give them something to eat.” This is a reminder that we receive Jesus in the Eucharist not only for ourselves, but for others. Jesus wants us to go out and feed others with the joy, the love, and the peace that God gives in the Holy Eucharist.
