The Power of Eucharistic Adoration

Father John Hardon’s quote truly emphasizes the importance of Adoration for Catholics today.

We tend to think that people can solve our problems – especially in matters of the world. If only the government would… if only the courts would… if only people would…, then we would not have problems with violence, crime, inflation or abortion. And to some degree this is true. However, when we invest so much in people, we tend to forget that the only one who can unite us and bring peace is Jesus Christ, who is truly present — body, blood, soul, and divinity –in the Holy Eucharist.

How powerful is Eucharistic adoration? From 2010-2015, the city of Ciudad Juarez was one of the most dangerous cities in Mexico, citing over 3,700 murders per year. A group of missionaries, led by Father Partrico Hileman, intervened and in 2013 established a Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration chapel in the heart of the city. Hour after hour, residents came to adore Christ, and by 2015 the number of murders dropped to less than 300. When a parish adores God day and night, graces permeate into the city itself, transforming the parish and the surrounding neighborhood.

Christ in the Eucharist is not only adorable but also entreatable. He desires for us to ask for what we need, like the blind man who begged, “Lord, that I may see.” Adoring Christ illuminates the mind, provides abundant grace, and gives ordinary people supernatural power to accomplish extraordinary deeds.

In the garden, Christ turned to His closest companions and asked, “Could you not watch one hour with me? Watch ye, and pray that ye enter not into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh weak” (Matthew 26:40-41). And the flesh is weak! We can do nothing without Him. As we look to the crazy world around us — where wars, natural disasters, and the grave sin of abortion lies rampant — let us find peace in the storm and spend just a bit of time with the only one who can rebuke it.
