OLW Students Visit Holocaust Museum
Our Lady of the Wayside 8th graders, along with Father Marat, Mrs. Griesmeyer, Mr. Andersen, and Mrs. Boarini, visited the Holocaust Museum in Skokie, Illinois on Thursday, March 16th. They have been studying the Holocaust both in social studies and language arts. The students have also been reading the book Night by Elie Wiesel who is a Holocaust survivor. During the visit, the teachers were the docents and explained various sections and displays within the museum. The students were highly engaged and asked fantastic questions.
After the tour, all had the privilege of hearing a survivor speaker. This gentleman — 4 years old when he left Germany for the United States — shared his perspective on how life in Germany was at the time, based on what his parents shared with him since he was only a child when he left.
Hearing a survivor speak is so important to this generation as it truly makes this historical event real and more relatable. It is so important for our students to understand the importance of studying the Holocaust and understanding the importance of being an UPSTANDER now and throughout life.
