ABOUT THE SECULAR FRANCISCAN ORDER: The Secular Franciscan Order is not a prayer group or club. Formerly known as the Third Order of St. Francis, it is an official Order within the Catholic Church and was established by St. Francis of Assisi early in the thirteenth century. Unlike religious brothers and sisters, those in Secular Orders—also known as Third Orders—don’t remove themselves from the world but remain in it; hence the term “secular”. Married or single women and men who are faithful, practicing Catholics are able to join Third Orders, as are diocesan priests and deacons.
