Why Violet during Lent?

Posted on February 17, 2021 by Published by

The color violet reminds us that we are living 40 days of reflection, penance, and spiritual conversion.  The Church decided to use violet as a symbol not just for penance, but as a reminder of the need to confront our own sins, to prepare ourselves spiritually, and to help our neighbors to draw closer to God.

This Lenten season you are encouraged to light up your homes with violet light.  Replace your porch light bulb, garage bulbs or lamp post bulb with a violet (purple) bulb and share your Lent journey with your neighbors.

Purple light bulbs can be purchased from many online sources including, but not limited to: Home Depot, Amazon, Grainger and others.
