Raise your Flag for Woody Hughes on February 23

Posted on February 15, 2021 by Published by

Dear Veterans and Friends:

February 23, 2021 is the 76th Anniversary of the Flag Raising on Mt. Suribachi during the WWII Battle of Iwo Jima. This historic Flag Raising has been commemorated at the USMC War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia (close to Arlington National Cemetery).  Much more at: Battle of Iwo Jima – Wikipedia

A great veteran and dear friend, Woody Hughes, was a young Marine in WWII.  At age 19, Woody participated in the Battle of Iwo Jima – one of the worst battles of the Pacific War.  Woody saw the Flag raised on Mt Suribachi.  It was a defining moment in his life that he shared with thousands of students, veterans and citizens until his death on February 2, 2021 at age 95.  Woody’s experiences were captured in a special Veterans Day interview created by Elk Grove High School: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpTI99yJNOI

A wonderful summary of Woody’s life can be found at Elwood Hughes Obituary – Visitation & Funeral Information (glueckertfuneralhome.com)

Woody had one last request. Woody asked that everyone raise the Flag on Tuesday, February 23, 2021 at 10 am local timeHis last request especially goes to all schools – because Woody was a teacher at Maine East and Maine West High Schools for 25 years. But Woody intended his last request for EVERYONE – businesses, veterans organizations, governments, churches, civic organizations, and individual citizens. In honor of a wonderful friend and USMC WWII veteran, Woody Hughes, please raise your Flag on Feb 23, 2021 at 10 am.

Please pass on this request. Please post to social media. Please encourage everyone to participate.  If you plan to raise the Flag on Feb 23rd, please let me know by return email.  We would like to let Woody’s family know.  If you take photos or videos, please post these and share a link with me. We will share with Woody’s family.

Respectfully,

Greg Padovani,
Chairman, Veterans Memorial Committee of Arlington Heights
