LENTEN SCRUTINIES By Deacon Mike Madison
**Note: As Masses are temporarily suspended in the Archdiocese and at OLW, please pray for the Elect as they continue their journey to becoming full members of the Church, the Body of Christ.
On March 8, those on the faith journey to complete the Sacraments of Initiation were called by name at Holy Name Cathedral and became the Elect. From that moment they entered a period of Purification and Enlightenment which continues through Lent to the Easter Vigil when the sacraments will be conferred. This period is meant for reflection and examination of the heart and mind.
The Scrutinies are celebrated on the 3rd, 4th and 5th weekends during Mass at 5:00 p.m., 11:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. respectively. Each Scrutiny contains an exorcism, a prayer casting out the spirit of evil, freeing one from sin. Each is related to the Gospel.
Today’s Gospel is about the woman at the well who truthfully answers Jesus about her sinfulness and seeks the living water he offers. It is this experience of knowing we are sinners that we strive to have what Jesus offers us. It is with the Holy Spirit that we are helped to recognize the Messiah. We travel this journey with the Elect and join them in this period of examination.
Please pray for the Elect as they continue their journey to becoming full members of the Church, the Body of Christ.
