Music Ministry

Music plays an essential role in the liturgical life of any parish. The music ministry at Our Lady of the Wayside exists to support liturgical goals of Vatican II:

  • to have active, conscious participation by the entire assembly.
  • to have the liturgical texts set to music.
  • to preserve our heritage as new music is included.
This is done by the musicians supporting the singing of the entire assembly as well as offering music unique to choirs, solo voice, or instrumentalists.

The parish employs a professionally prepared full time Director of Music, Dan McMahon, to direct all facets of music in worship.

If you are interested in the opportunities below, contact OLW Music Ministry at the Parish Office or at musicministry@olwparish.org.

  • Choir (high-school age on up) A larger group of singers and instrumentalists who lead music at the 5:00 p.m. Saturday liturgy as well as the “high feasts.” The repertoire covers the scope of Christian music from chant into the 21st Century. Practices are on Thursday nights at 7:30 p.m. in church. The ability to read music is not necessary. Virtus training required.

  • Ensemble (various ages) A smaller group of singers and instrumentalists who lead music at the 9:45 a.m. liturgy. This group is open to those of junior high school age and up. Practices are held on Tuesday nights at 7:30 p.m. in the former parish office of the rectory. The ability to read music is not necessary. Virtus training required.

  • Cantor (high school age and up) Cantors lead the assembly in our sung worship and have task of proclaiming the Responsorial Psalm. Cantors should be experienced singers with the ability to read musical notation. If you might be interested in this aspect of music ministry please contact the music director to arrange for a voice assessment and or training to become a cantor. Virtus training required.

  • Teen Choir (7th-12th grade) A group of singers and instrumentalists who lead sung worship at the 11:30 a.m. Mass once each month or more often if the group desires. Practices will be held on Saturdays in church the day before singing.

  • Jubilation Choirs (K-8th grade) Two children's choirs meet weekly, click here for a registration form.
    • Junior Jubliation, K-2nd grade, rehearsals Thursdays 4-5 p.m.
    • Jubliation, 3rd-8th grade, rehearsals on Wednesdays from 4-5 p.m.

  • Instrumentalists/Keyboardists Instrumentalists and keyboardists are a wonderful supplement to our music in worship at all of our weekend liturgies. Persons interested must contact the Music Director to have him assess their playing proficiency level. Virtus training required.

  • Funeral Choir The Funeral Choir assists the assembly by welcoming and leading the sung worship as well as spoken responses at our funeral liturgies. There are no regular rehearsals and members are notified by a phone relay. No prior choir experience is required, just the willingness to attend the liturgies. Virtus training required.

  • Handbells Handbells meet on Saturday mornings at 9:00 a.m.- 11:00 a.m. in the choir loft and furnish special music at the 5:00 p.m. liturgy and other special occasions. Players must have the ability to read music. Virtus training required.

  • Hymn Selection Committee The committee is made up of a small group of parishioners (some from the choirs, musicians and at-large members) responsible for selection of the hymns that are sung each week during the Sunday liturgies. Members prepare by reading all the readings for each Sunday mass: Antiphons, Readings, Gospel, Psalms and Acclamation. They go through lists of hymns to find songs that are taken from the same scripture or continue the theme of those readings. They then meet monthly together with Dan McMahon, the Director of Music, to determine which hymns will be sung at Mass. Meetings are monthly on the second Monday of the Month at 7:30 in the old rectory meeting room. Ability to read music is preferable but not necessary.
