This weekend is the final weekend for collecting gifts for the people of St. Mark's Parish. If you have not already taken an envelope to help, please stop by the trees on your way out and take one. The need is very great this year. We are seeking the help to make the holiday special for children, adults and families. With that in mind we have structured our method of giving to best meet their need. We ask that your gift be provided in the form of a gift card. The gift card allows the parent to purchase exactly what their child wants or needs. A gift card for an adult may provide the purchase of much needed gloves or a scarf.

This weekend is the final weekend for returning your gifts. We ask that you place your return gift envelope in the boxes at the back of the church near the Giving Trees. Thank you for joining us in this expression of the
Christmas Spirit.

Advent is a time of preparation for us to prepare
ourselves for Jesus. Please take advantage of the
Reconciliation Services offered at multi parishes.

OLW COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE CONTINUE MODERNIZATION MOVE

Wayside's relatively new Communications Committee took steps last Wednesday to broaden the communication avenues in which the parish can reach parishioners by adopting and enhancing some of the new communications methods that have been developed in a rapidly changing technical environment.

While the parish itself and OLWs School utilize Facebook and other "new" means of communications, there is acknowledgement that technological advances have been swift and there are many tools - some already in use at OLW - that can improve communications between the parish and its parishioners.

Former OLW Parishioner Jim Rafter, a communications consultant who now lives in Wisconsin, has been working with the OLW Communications Committee to suggest, develop, and ultimately implement more modern and effective communications for OLW and its parishioners.

More that 1,600 parishioners opened a recent e-mailed "Happy Thanksgiving" video message from OLW Pastor Father Ed Fialkowski, one of the first OLW uses of electronic videos to parishioners.

Video message to parishioners, especially those who are home-bound, are likely to become more common. Plans are underway for a Christmas message and continued expansion and enhancement of communications between the parish and parishioners.

***

Earlier Wednesday, OLW parish participated in an Archdiocesan "webinar" in which parishes discussed means of welcoming new parishioners in more effective ways intended to make them feel more "at home," and also to provide them with means of becoming active through participation in various parish activities.

"Welcoming new parishioners and making them feel at home is one of the most important tasks the parish staff and congregation have when new people move into a parish," said a representative of the Archdiocese of Chicago.

The Archdiocese's communications program is running nearly parallel to Wayside's. The benefit to OLW is that different programs and activities utilized in different parishes are available for comparison and evaluation by Our Lady of the Wayside. There are 378 parishes in the Archdiocese of Chicago, which covers Cook and Lake counties in Illinois.

November (and early December) weather in Arlington Heights can be very unpredictable. It was bright and sunny as the Advent season was beginning earlier this week and the Advent banners were blowing in the wind on Monday, November 28, but it was a different story for these parents of OLW pre-schoolers and kindergarteners just 24 hours later, on Tuesday, November 29.
