Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time

We invite you join us again this year in making a difference for the individuals and families of St Mark parish who are in such great need. This year the families are struggling even more than past years. The need for warm clothes and food continues.

I would like to provide a brief explanation of how the Giving Tree works. St. Mark's provides us with a list of families and individuals that need our help. The list includes people of all ages. For many of these families, the contribution from Wayside will be the only material gifts that they receive.

We are seeking the help to make the holiday special for children, adults and families. With that in mind we have structured our method of giving to best meet their need. We ask that your gift be provided in the form of a gift card. The gift card allows the parent to purchase exactly what their child wants OR needs. A gift card for an adult may provide for the purchase of much needed warm sweater or gloves.

Each envelope hung on the trees represents an individual that needs our help. Enclosed in each envelope is a slip for ordering gift certificates. You may purchase gifts cards on your own or use the slip to indicate amount of your gift and your choice of store. Return the envelope with your check and the slip completed and we will purchase the gift card through our school.

We ask that you place your return gift envelope in the boxes at the back of church near the Giving Trees or in the Parish office. The final date for gift return is December 10, 2017. This allows time for our gifts to be delivered to and distributed at St. Mark and allows the families time to shop.

Thank you for joining us in this beautiful expression of the Christmas Spirit.

OLW PADS MINISTRY

"Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one's life does not consist of possessions."
  Lk. 12: 13-21

This passage from Luke's Gospel is a reminder to us that it's not the material things in life that are important, but our faith in God and active compassion for each other that will ultimately reap the greatest happiness.

Thankfully, OLW offers us many ways to actively live our faith. The PADS ministry is just one of the opportunities that relies on volunteers to provide a very important ministry to those in need of food and shelter.

What is PADS?

  • Public Action to Deliver Shelter
  • One of three programs offered by JOURNEYS|The Road Home, a comprehensive service agency whose mission is to individually assess and serve the homeless and near homeless, while broadening community awareness and involvement with the homeless.
  • Provides hospitality, fellowship, food, and overnight shelter to the homeless between October 1 and April 30, seven days a week (including holidays). The sites are staffed entirely by volunteers who prepare, supervise, and clean sleeping accommodations, as well as prepare and serve dinner, breakfast, and a sack lunch.

OLW PADS site:

  • Open every Wednesday night from October 1 through April 30
  • There are three shifts that we staff:
1. 6:00 pm - 11:00 pm (requires 3-4 volunteers)
2. 11:00 pm - 3:00 am (requires 2 volunteers)
3. 3:00 am - 7:00 am (requires 2 volunteers)
  • On average, we serve approximately 20 guests each week.

How can you help?

  • We need more volunteers! Volunteer for a shift for one week or a shift every week - it's entirely up to you. We appreciate any time you have to offer! You can choose the date/times you are able to volunteer.
  • Team up with a spouse or friend to work a shift; or sign up individually and meet some new friends!
  • Stop by our PADS information table after Mass today so we can answer any questions you have.
  • Can't stop by? Please send us an email to let us know you're interested.

We hope you'll consider volunteering for this very important ministry.

#GivingTuesday is a philanthropic movement and a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving and the widely recognized shopping events of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving.

OLW students give back often throughout the year. They have just donated enough food and grocery store gift cards to help 11 local families at Thanksgiving and middle school students will soon plan their annual Target shopping trip to buy gifts for local less fortunate families. They also write letters to the homebound and to veterans and make blankets for Project Linus.

On November 28, 2017, we hope you will make a donation in the spirit of the #GivingTuesday movement and in support of Our Lady of the Wayside School. All donations will support the OLW School Annual Fund. An email with a donation link will be sent to everyone that receives Wayside Wednesday .

Please come and join us.
All are welcome - adults and children.

OLW Students Salute - and learn from - U.S., Military Vets

Sixth, seventh and eighth graders of Our Lady of the Wayside School heard interesting, nerve-wracking - and some humorous - stories about life in the United States military from more than a dozen parishioners who participated in a "Salute To Our Veterans" in observation of Veterans Day last week.

Students gathered in the Middle School gymnasium Monday morning and heard brief presentations from a handful of the veterans who have served around the world in all branches of the U.S. military.

Veterans were led into the Mackin Center by Arlington Heights Bagpiper Bill Kissane, a frequent participant in police and military services and Arlington Heights parades.

OLW Pastor, Father Ed Fialkowski opened the 90-minute program with a prayer and was followed by brief remarks from OLW School Principal David Wood. OLW Teacher Matthew Martino coordinated the program.
