November 1, 2017

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

When Pope Francis announced that the First World Day of the Poor would take place on November 19, 2017, he stated that, "Whenever we set out to love as Jesus loved, we have to take the Lord as our example; especially when it comes to loving the poor," reminding us once again that we should always care for our brothers and sisters affected by poverty.

The Catholic Campaign for Human Development answers Christ's call to action by addressing the root causes of poverty and injustice in low-income communities through financial support of grassroots initiatives and transformative educational efforts. One such organization is the South Side Community Federal Credit Union. With the support of a CCHD grant, the SSCFCU has saved over 875 families from foreclosure through housing and credit counseling and has reinvested over $1 million in assets in the local economy through interest rate loans in neighborhoods that are otherwise vulnerable to high rates of poverty, unemployment, and financial instability.

By emphasizing self-help, participation, and cooperation, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development's holistic approach leads to increased human dignity and stronger, more economically viable communities. To learn more about CCHD's impact in our communities or to donate online, please visit

Your generous support of the CCHD Annual Collection, which will take place on Saturday, November 18 and Sunday, November 19, is the primary source of funding for over twenty organizations working to combat poverty and injustice in Cook and Lake Counties. It is my prayer that, as we prepare for the annual celebration of Thanksgiving Day, you consider contributing to CCHD through this secondary collection and keep its efforts in your thoughts and prayers. With every good wish, I remain,

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Cardinal Blase J. Cupich
Archbishop of Chicago

Our Lady of the Wayside salutes our Veterans

Our Lady of the Wayside Parish and Our Lady of the Wayside School will salute U.S. Military Veterans at a ceremony and reception at Our Lady of the Wayside School Monday, November 13.

OLW Parish has been attempting to locate and identify parishioners who are veterans for the past two years and while the list continues to grow, we realize it is impossible to locate all veterans unless they (or family members) provide their names and contact information. The names included in this week's Bulletin are veterans whom we have identified.

All who are listed here - and others who have not yet been located - are invited to a "Veterans Day Tribute" at OLW School at 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 13, in the Father Mackin Center at OLW School (gymnasium).

All seventh and eighth grade OLW students will be in attendance and will have a chance to meet with veterans and ask questions. Light refreshments will be served.

A group photo of the veterans and students will be taken and published in next week's OLW Bulletin. Copies will be provided to students and veterans.

Questions should be directed to officeservices @olwparish.org or to 847-253-5353.

Fannie May is BACK again! OLW School will be conducting a Fannie May candy sale for the Christmas Holidays! Proceeds from this candy sale will be used by OLW School to offset the cost of improving our school programs.

Fannie May candies might be a familiar item on your Holiday gift-giving list and if you order from this sale, you not only save 5% on the total cost of each item, but you also save approximately 10% in sales tax. AND the best part of all is the fact that you don't have to drive to the store and wait in line!

It's simple to order and IT IS DELIVERED TO YOUR HOME! No need to come and pick it up at school! Just drop off the order form, with payment (checks made payable to Our Lady of the Wayside School), in the  school or parish office before Monday, November 13th. Your order will be delivered to your home the last week in November. Just in time for the holidays and entertaining.

If you have any questions, please contact Chris Tiltz in the school office at 847-255-0050 ext. 245 or by email at ctiltz @olwschool.org. Thank you for helping your parish school.
