October 29, 2017

Priesthood Sunday, the last Sunday of October, is a special day set aside to honor the priesthood in the United States. This year the day falls on October 29, 2017. It is a day to reflect upon and affirm the role of the priesthood in the life of the Church as a central one.

PRAYER FOR PRIESTS

Lord, God, most holy,
we approach you in gratitude for your holy ordained priesthood.
You have called these men to be set apart
and to shepherd your people,
as you shepherd your entire church.
We pray for them in their daily work.
Grant to them an increase in spiritual gifts and grace,
so they may be prepared for the tasks at hand.
Lead them not into temptation
and protect them from the grasp of the evil one.
It is through the sacraments they confer
that we encounter the divine in a real and profound way.
May your church never lose sight of these,
your special sons, and may we, the body of Christ,
never fail to cherish the gift of their lives,
which they have freely given to you and your holy church.
We ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son.
Amen.

MASS OF REMEMBRANCE

On November 4th at the 5:00 p.m. Mass we will remember our loved ones who have gone before us, especially those who have died in the past year. Families who have lost loved ones in the last year are invited to join in the entrance procession for this Mass. If you wish to participate in this way, please reserve your seats in the church and then meet in the Gathering Place at 4:45 p.m. to receive a remembrance candle and prepare for the procession. You are then invited to take the candle home with you after Mass.

PURPLE WRIST BANDS CALL ATTENTION TO DOMESTIC ABUSE MINISTRY

Attendees at last weekend's Masses at Our Lady of the Wayside received purple wrist bands and had a chance to learn of the dangers of domestic violence.

As an article in last Sunday's Bulletin pointed out, domestic violence is a pattern of coercive control that one person exerts over another. It can take many forms and is present across all ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Two small posters were displayed, recalling details of specific instances of domestic abuse. One involved a former resident of Arlington Heights.

SEVENTH GRADERS PREP FOR CONFIRMATION

Seventh graders from Our Lady of the Wayside and neighboring public schools are preparing for Confirmation early next year. OLW Youth Director Sean Norris was one of the speakers at a Religious Education Retreat for the seventh graders in the Father Mackin Center Gym last weekend.

'WOMEN AT THE WELL' FEATURES
Liturgical Arts Expert

A catechist, liturgy planner and life-long devotee of the liturgical arts held the attention of OLW women at the most recent session of "Women At The Well," OLW's periodic Saturday morning lecture and discussion sessions.

Bob Norwalk, an artist/teacher and certified catechist from Culver, Indiana, displayed a variety of historic artworks depicting Jesus in various artworks and discussed the history and symbolism of many works of art dating back hundreds - even thousands - of years.

As usual, OLW women filled the Gathering Place for the brilliant presentation.
