Spring 2018

Dear Sisters and brothers in Christ,

Mother's Day is a day we honor and remember the special women in our lives who have nurtured, loved and shaped us into the people we are today. It is through their unconditional love that we begin to understand the depth of Christ's love for us, and his command to share that love with one another.

On Mother's Day, May 13 each of us will have an opportnity to share Christ's unconditional love with the poor and vulnerable through our gift to the Catholic Charities Mother's Day Collection. For Catholic Charities, charity is not just about providing material assistance, but acting with the same love and mercy that Jesus showed to restore people's dignity and give them the hope of a brighter future. Catholic Charities counts on our volunteer and financial support to offer comprehensive programs that get to the root cause of suffering, address multiple needs, and help people rebuild their lives for the better.

Pope Francis has used a powerful image of the Church as "field hospitals." During war, field hospitals are situated right on the battlegrounds - close to the wounded who need help. Similarly, as part of the Church in the Archdiocese of Chicago, Catholic Charities 150 service locations are very much like field hospitals, helping those who are suffering, and located in neighborhoods that have sadly become real battlegrounds, plagued with violence and despair. Catholic Charities program sites are safe havens in desperate areas and their staff and volunteers are truly  ministers of mercy, providing help through a hot meal, a bag of food, a place to live, the care of a child or elderly relative, counseling, job training, job placement, or all of these things. Serving nearly one million people each year, Catholic Charities brings Christ's love and mercy to the people and the places that need it most.

Please accept my sincere gratitude for your past support  of the Catholic Charities Mother's Day Collection, and please consider  being as generous as you can again this year. Contributions can be made during the second collection on Mother's Day, anytime at
www.catholiccharities.net/donate, or mail your gift to Catholic Charities, 721 N. LaSalle St., Chicago, IL 60654. May God  bless you and those you love this Mother's Day and always. With every good wish, I remain

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Cardinal Blase J. Cupich
Archbishop of Chicago

PLANT SALE, SPAGHETTI DINNER KEEP OLW TEENS (AND ADULTS) BUSYAND FED

Participants in OLW's Youth Ministry had a busy (and sometimes chilly) weekend last Saturday and Sunday as they conducted two events at the same time, spread over two days.

Cold weather on Saturday didn't keep the teens from opening the OLW Plant Sale in the church parking lot. Prospective buyers weren't real anxious to shop for garden plants in the cold but the story was different on Sunday morning as Sunday Mass attendees came close to cleaning out the available plants.

It was warmer inside the OLW gym on Saturday night and several hundred OLW parishioners and teens enjoyed the spaghetti dinner, raffle and coffee house atmosphere.

OLW Youth director Sean Norris said the dinner was successful (it was a first-time event, replacing the pancake breakfast of previous years) and almost all the plants were sold.
