BISHOP KANE CONFIRMS 146 OLW YOUNGSTERS IN TWO MARCH 11 CEREMONIES

Nearly 150 boys and girls from Our Lady of the Wayside School and several public schools in the area received the Sacrament of Confirmation March 11 in two separate ceremonies at OLW Church.

Auxiliary Bishop Francis J. Kane of the Archdiocese of Chicago confirmed the youngsters, most of whom are in eighth grade and who will begin high school in August or September.

Our Lady of the Wayside's Directors of Religious Education, Sister Joan Shields and Sister Adrienne Weseman, supervised the ceremony, in addition to supervising the training of the young people.

The most common names taken as "confirmation names" were Sebastian, for boys (plus one girl) and Cecilia for girls.

Students typically select a "confirmation name" to honor a family member or to recognize a saint or some other figure with a connection to the Catholic Church.

Among the "uncommon" names selected this year were "Cosmos and Damian," "Quiteria," "Adjutor," and "Bernward."

OLW's church was full for both ceremonies, followed by receptions following the ceremonies in the Father Mackin Center.

Bishop Kane and OLW Pastor Father Ed Fialkowski posed for photos with the newly-confirmed students and their parents and brothers and sisters.

THE MAN OF THE SHROUD EXHIBIT DRAWS HUNDREDS TO OLW

Hundreds of Our Lady of Our Lady of the Wayside parishioners toured an inspiring exhibit and depiction of the Shroud of Turin, believed by many to be the burial cloth of Jesus of Nazareth, during a two-day visit to OLW Sunday and Monday, March 12 and 13.

The two-day exhibit featured a live "Skype" presentation by Dr. Wayne Phillips on Sunday afternoon. OLW attendees were able to ask questions of Dr. Phillips following his live presentation.

The exhibit was loaned to Our Lady of the Wayside by the Conventional Franciscan Friars of Marytown.

The exhibit included a life-size canvas reproduction of the Shroud. The image is more than 14 feet long and 3 feet wide and shows the front and back images of the Shroud.

The exhibit presents the results of a comprehensive scientific and forensic study of numerous photographs and illustrations and is the work of the Center for the Study of the Passion of Christ.
